Time To Start Practicing That Golf Swing!

It’s time to start thinking about the 2nd Annual USF/Chi Phi Scholarship Scramble!  Last year’s golf tournament was a success, so it goes without saying that the Delta Zeta Alumni Association will host the second annual tourney to help raise funds for the Chi Phi Educational Trust.

2010golfThis year’s Scramble will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at 8:30 a.m.  The location has changed, and the tournament will take place at the Babe Zaharias Golf Course located at 11412 Forest Hills Drive, Tampa, Florida  33612.  More about this course can be found at http://www.babezahariasgc.com.

There will, of course, be prizes for the winning teams, as well as some great raffles and some fun-filled games at some of the holes.  Those who came out and participates last year can testify to the great time had by all – so pull out those clubs and start practicing those swings, because October will be here before you know it!

Did You Know … ?

Chi Phi is known for not only strengthening the bonds of Brotherhood, but for also producing some of the finest gentlemen this country has ever seen.  But did you know that some of those gentlemen went on to become quite well known?

Walter Cronkite

Walter Cronkite – yes, THAT Walter Cronkite – was a Chi Phi from the University of Texas.  The longtime nightly news anchorman learned sound journalistic practices both in college and while working for United Press International. “Cementing bonds of life-long friendship that can be a source of happiness through life” was his testimonial to his Chi Phi Fraternity experience.

 Mark Ordesky

Mark Ordesky, an Oscar-winning producer who is now the president of the Fine Line division of New Line Cinema, is a Chi Phi from the University of Southern California.  He was the executive producer of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, as well as a number of other films you may have seen.

 Chris Hardwick

Chris Hardwick,  a name quickly recognizable to anyone who is a fan of AMC’s The Walking Dead and its follow-up talk show, The Talking Dead, is a Chi Phi from the University of California, Los Angeles.  He has also hosted MTV’s Singled Out, he has appeared on Attack of the Show, and has had brief appearances in a number of television shows and films.

 Dan Bakkedahl

Dan Bakkedahl, a former correspondent for Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, is a Chi Phi from Florida State University.  He has made guest appearances on numerous television shows, as well as had recurring roles on shows such as Community, Veep, and Legit.

And these are not the only famous Chi Phi.  Adam Larson of MTV’s Road Rules 10: The Quest is a Chi Phi from Boston University, and Gabriel Cade, a participant in CBS’ hit series, Survivor, is a Chi Phi from the University of NC, Wilmington.

You never know where the path of a Chi Phi will lead, and you just never know whether that television show or movie your are watching might just star a Brother!

Delta Zeta Covers The Chakett – AGAIN!

You read that right – Delta Zeta has made the cover of the Spring Issue of Chi Phi’s national magazine, The Chi Phi Chakett in the form of the Chapter’s current Beta, Miles C. White.  One of the magazine’s lead stories is about the recent Alpha’s Academy, a program designed specifically to prepare Chi Phi men to serve as Alphas for their Chapter.   10273414_10151975616151717_6199169853545739392_nBrother White has always wanted to go to a National Chi Phi Congress and learn all that he could about the Fraternity, how it works at other schools, and to basically find out if Chi Phi’s were “awesome” nationwide.  He found his opportunity in the Alpha’s Academy, which turned out to be one of the greatest experiences of his life!

For Brother White, the Alpha’s Academy did exactly what it sets out to do – it better prepares an inexperienced exec board member to be the ideal Chi Phi president.  “It shows us our leadership styles and highlights our weaknesses,” he explained.  “There were also many discussions that were freely based, so we had the opportunity to figure out what our Chapter was doing wrong and some possible solutions.  I spent lots of time networking with other Alphas to try and get advice on issues within our Chapter and how we might best address them.  The results have been stupendous.”

Brother White relates an experience he has while having lunch with some other Alphas, 1238211_10200647266079845_1541784739_nspecifically from University of California-Davis and Oregan State.  “I asked them how they tackled Rush Week and Recruitment,” he said.  “They looked at me kind of funny and said, ‘Rush Week isn’t important.’  They went on to explain the idea of True 365 Recruitment.  They helped me realize that Rush events could be anytime, and that we could be having events whenever we wanted.  I brought this back to our Chapter, gave it to my Rush Chair, and we made it happen.”  Since returning, Brother White’s enthusiasm has spread, and the Chapter has had a Recruitment workshop, along with a non-Rush Week recruitment event to specifically encourage potential new members to hang out with Chi Phi.

“Alpha’s Academy gave me all the tools necessary to run a Chapter,” Brother White added.  “As Beta, it has been instrumental in my development.”
