In the News – Sam Foster, John Baker

STARTING TODAY, every other Monday on this newsfeed, we will feature Alumni News – anything going on, not just with the Delta Zeta Alumni Association itself, but also any big announcements pertaining to the individual Alumni, will be shared here.

383305_10151202495787419_679239300_nBig thanks goes out to Brother Sam Foster, who paid his Alumni Association dues in September.  As more Alumni pay their dues, not only do they increase the amount of Brothers who are eligible to vote at the upcoming Fall DZAA meeting, but they also assist in keeping the Association going so that we can continue to offer social activities, special events, and functions.  Snaps to Brother Foster and all the other Alumni who are current on their dues!

If you’ve got news or an announcement, please let us know so that we can post it here and all of your Brothers can share in it!

Have You Checked Out The Wine Press?

As you may have guessed by now, one of the biggest goals of the current Executive Board of the DZAA is better communication.  We are striving to make better contact with each and every one of our Alumni Brothers, and part of the way we are doing that is through our Alumni Association newsletter, the Wine Press.

Whether it’s promoting our golfing fundraiser to raise funds for the Chi Phi Educational Trust, reporting on the growth of the Active Chapter, or catching up with some of our fellow Alumni, the Wine Press has been an outreach to the Alumni.  Where else would you have learned that the Alumni won again in the annual Alumni vs. Actives game?  Or that DZAA helped to rebuild Tampa?  Or find out what’s been happening in the lives of fellow Alumni, such as Brian Harff and Cesar Ribot?

Now, with the successful creation of this new website and its regular newsfeed updates every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, the Wine Press is being reinvented to make the most of it.   Each new issue of the Wine Press (the most recent issue having just been e-mailed out this week) will capture some of the biggest newsfeeds from the website, as well as feature some new material specific to the newsletter.  In this way, those who don’t read the website on a regular basis will still have a means to catch up on all the Alumni Association news, and those who do read the website regularly will still have a few new articles to read.  And if you miss an issue, they are all archived right here on our website:

So don’t delete those e-mails – check out the Wine Press…check out the website…and stay informed of the latest news from the Delta Zeta Alumni Association!

Chi Phi 3rd Annual Spelling Bee Philanthropy

SpellingBee_Page_1

The active chapter is hosting their Third Annual Spelling Bee to raise funds for the Boys and Girls Club of America.  Seeing the amount of success they have had in the past two years with this competition, the Chapter felt that it was right to do it again!  The event date is listed on the Facebook event page:

https://www.facebook.com/events/681312978565440/

Tuesday, October 29th
6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
MSC Oval Theater
*The event will start promptly at 6:00pm. Please have participants arrive no less than 30 minutes early.

The competition is simply a spelling bee. There is a 5 participant limit per organization. Each participant must be an active member of their respective organization. Entrance fee for each spelling participant will be $15. General admission at the door will be $2 (excluding participants). Competition works as follows:

There are 2 ways in which one can advance to the next round –

1) The participant correctly spells the given word.
2) Someone uninvolved in the competition can pay to keep the participant in should they fail to spell the word correctly.

There is no limit to the number of times one can be bought back into the competition; however, the amount needed to remain in the competition goes up in intervals of $5 each time.

1st buy back = $5
2nd buy back = $10
3rd buy back = $15
And so on.

Organizational tabs will be offered. If an organization is paying for a participant or multiple participants using chapter funds, we will keep track of the total amount that organization has used for buy backs so that they can make one simple payment at the end of the event. The pattern can continue this way indefinitely until the final half hour, in which the participant must correctly spell the word to advance in the competition.

The winners in the spelling bee will simply be the top 3 spellers. Trophies will be awarded to those placing in the top 3. There will also be an overall winner of the philanthropy. There are three categories that determine the winning organization:

1. Placement in top 3 spellers.
2. Attendance percentage for the organization
3. Best costume  (The costume will be judged by design and creativity [the funnier the better].)

A trophy will be awarded to the overall winning organization of the philanthropy.  All proceeds will be donated to the Boys and Girls Club of America.  The Chapter is encouraging any and all Alumni to come out, show support to the Active Chapter, and enjoy an evening of members of the Greek community showcasing their ability to spell!
