In the News – Adam Feinberg and Todd Latoski

“Young Donor Makes Lasting Impact on Chapter and Chi Phi.”  This is the headline to an article in the Fall 2013 printed issue of The Chi Phi Chakett which highlights Delta Zeta alumnus, Brother DSCN2132Adam Feinberg and his more than generous donation to support Chi Phi and Delta Zeta.  Brother Feinberg joined the MacLean Legacy Society this past spring with a $50,000 life insurance gift to the Fraternity, and he sat down for an interview with Senior Director of Development, Elizabeth Knott, to discuss his life with Chi Phi and the reasons for his donation.   So, with the three other DZAA mentions in this issue of the Chakett, Brother Feinberg’s article  raises it to a total of four nods to our Alumni Association in just one issue!  To read the full article, check out the inside cover of the Fall 2013 Chakett, or you can read the entire article online at http://www.chiphi.org/chakettonline/educational-trust/2013/10/young-donor-makes-lasting-impact-on-chapter-and-chi-phi/.

On the lighter side of things, fellow alumnus, Brother Todd Latoski, has been involved in his community theater for the past four years, and this weekend was the opening weekend of his latest play, “Drinking Habits.”  Brother Latoski DSCN2233plays an investigative reporter sent to uncover the truth behind a rumor that nuns are making award-winning wine at the local convent.  A hilarious farce, the play finds Brother Latoski changing identities, changing costumes, and changing stories so much you’ll need a score card!  The play is at the Shoestring Theater in Lake Helen (just outside of Orange City and Deltona) and runs for two more weekends.  For more info on the play, go to the website at http://shoestringtheatre.net/.  If you’re in the area, come out and support Brother Latoski and enjoy more than a few laughs!

If you’ve got news or an announcement, please don’t forget to let us know so that we can post it here and let all of your Brothers share in it!

Check Out the Chakett!

The Fall 2013 issue of The Chi Phi Chakett is out!  Hopefully you didn’t put it aside without reading it, because if you did, then you missed out on seeing the Delta Zeta Alumni Association – not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES in this one issue!

On page 15, the Chakett highlights innovative ways that various Chapters and DSCN2126Alumni Associations help increase their College Excellence Funds.  Xi Delta (from the Florida Institute of Technology) uses excess housing funds, Iota Delta Alumni Association (from Indiana University) sold Kroger gift cards, and – – yes, that’s right, the Delta Zeta Alumni Association is highlighted for its first annual golf tournament!  While we didn’t quite meet the $10,000 goal mentioned in the article, the tournament was still a success, and it is definitely exciting to see our Association’s fundraising efforts mentioned for all Chi Phi to see!

Then, on the very next page (page 16), we find an article that congratulates all of the winners of the 2013 Chi Phi Scholarships.  If you look closely at that picture of the men DSCN2127who were recognized at the Congressional Awards Banquet and Scholarship Luncheon, you’ll see our very own alumnus, Brother David Ebner, who was the recipient of a Neel Scholarship!  The Neel Scholarship was created from a $250,000 bequest provided to Chi Phi by Ms. Eugenia Neel, who provided this gift in honor of her father and brothers, all of whom were Chi Phi men!  Congratulations goes out to Brother Ebner for being selected as a scholarship recipient!

And last, but certainly not least, way back near the end on page 41, you’ll see a nearly half-page picture of the Delta Zeta DSCN2129Alumni Association from their volunteering efforts at Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay.  This picture originally was shown on the Chakett online magazine, but to have it published in the print edition of the Chakett is an incredible thrill, to know that the National Office, in printing this issue, felt the DZAA’s community service worthy of acknowledging in such a way!  Snaps to Brothers Purdon, Shah, Ebner, Suarez, Millsap, Dafnis, and Holm for their volunteering efforts!

If you didn’t read the Chakett, go back and read it now – see how your Alumni Association is on the move in 2013 and get ready to get involved as we move on the even greater things in 2014!

The First Annual USF Chi Phi Scholarship Scramble is over – and the Old Guys won!  With ten teams and lots of volunteers and supporters, the first ever DZAA golf tournament was a fantastic success.  Alumni, Actives, and their family and friends showed off their golfing skills, but when it came down to the wire, it was the “Old Guys” who walked away the winner – the “Old Guys” being Brian Harff, Steve Shelton, Ken Bjelke, and Mike Bergland.  Congratulations, gentlemen, on a game well played!

And for those that weren’t there, you missed out on the hole challenges, such as the Cornhole Challenge and the Tutu Challenge (c’mon – how many of you regret, now, missing out on seeing Alumni such as David Ebner, Ryan Suarez, and Patrick Vega, along with our Active Brother, Kyle Schlenker, wearing tutus?!).  Plus, tickets upon tickets upon tickets were sold for the raffle as attendees placed their hopes on winning prizes such as a foursome at Westchase Golf Club, a PowerBilt Putter, 2 tickets for MOSI and 2 tickets for the Aquarium, and the ever-popular 4 USF Tumblers!

After all expenses were paid, the First Annual USF Chi Phi Scholarship Scramble raised a little over $1,500 for the Chi Phi Educational Trust, which provides scholarships to the young men of Chi Phi to help pay for their education.  A big THANK YOU goes out to all the volunteers who gave so much of their time to help make the event a success – without each and every one of you, we couldn’t have done it.  And an even bigger THANKS goes out to Board members, Brothers Kyllan Purdon and David Ebner, for the many hours that were spent over the last several months putting this event together, getting a host course, organizing the sponsors, volunteers, and challenges, and making it a great opportunity for Brothers, both old and new, to get together for a great cause.

Now the planning begins for the Second Annual USF Chi Phi Scholarship Scramble for Fall 2014…
