Chapter News Extra! Homecoming Extravaganza

Homecoming Week wasn’t just a big event for the Alumni Association, what with the Fall Meeting, Tailgating, and Golf Tournament – it was also a winning week for the Chapter as well.  And win they did!  The Delta Zeta Chapter of the Chi Phi Fraternity teamed up with the ladies of Chi Omega and the gentlemen of Delta Chi to compete in the numerous Homecoming events.  Not only did they take 6 of the 8 First Place sashes (CharitaBull, Blood Drive, Shriner’s Tabs, Green and Gold Rush, Color the Campus, and Overall), but the Chapter also took home the First Place Trophy for Homecoming 2013!

In addition to these great successes, the Chapter’s current Alpha, Jose Suarez, made it to the final round of the RedBull Play & Destroy competition, where students went head to head in an iPod battle.  The student DJs were given a category and had to play the beset 30 seconds of a song to win the crowd over.  Brother Suarez went up against a member of Sigma Chi, turning the tournament into a battle between fraternities.  At the end of the night, Chi Phi’s very own was declared to be the winner and named the top RedBull DJ of Tampa Bay!

Turns out that both the Alumni and the Actives had a successful Homecoming Week – so snaps to all of the Delta Zeta Brothers!

The First Annual USF Chi Phi Scholarship Scramble is over – and the Old Guys won!  With ten teams and lots of volunteers and supporters, the first ever DZAA golf tournament was a fantastic success.  Alumni, Actives, and their family and friends showed off their golfing skills, but when it came down to the wire, it was the “Old Guys” who walked away the winner – the “Old Guys” being Brian Harff, Steve Shelton, Ken Bjelke, and Mike Bergland.  Congratulations, gentlemen, on a game well played!

And for those that weren’t there, you missed out on the hole challenges, such as the Cornhole Challenge and the Tutu Challenge (c’mon – how many of you regret, now, missing out on seeing Alumni such as David Ebner, Ryan Suarez, and Patrick Vega, along with our Active Brother, Kyle Schlenker, wearing tutus?!).  Plus, tickets upon tickets upon tickets were sold for the raffle as attendees placed their hopes on winning prizes such as a foursome at Westchase Golf Club, a PowerBilt Putter, 2 tickets for MOSI and 2 tickets for the Aquarium, and the ever-popular 4 USF Tumblers!

After all expenses were paid, the First Annual USF Chi Phi Scholarship Scramble raised a little over $1,500 for the Chi Phi Educational Trust, which provides scholarships to the young men of Chi Phi to help pay for their education.  A big THANK YOU goes out to all the volunteers who gave so much of their time to help make the event a success – without each and every one of you, we couldn’t have done it.  And an even bigger THANKS goes out to Board members, Brothers Kyllan Purdon and David Ebner, for the many hours that were spent over the last several months putting this event together, getting a host course, organizing the sponsors, volunteers, and challenges, and making it a great opportunity for Brothers, both old and new, to get together for a great cause.

Now the planning begins for the Second Annual USF Chi Phi Scholarship Scramble for Fall 2014…

President’s Message

Brothers,

Nothing has been more pressing on our 25th_purdon_and_ebnerBoard than the upcoming Homecoming Weekend. The men you have elected to serve you have done a great job in planning a weekend of fun, meaningful Brotherhood.   Today, we will have our bi-annual meeting in the Marshall Center Room 2707 at USF starting at 7:00 PM. Around 8:00 PM, we will be heading over to Mr. Dunderbak’s on Bruce B Downs. All Alumni and Actives are welcome to attend both events today.

On Saturday, our USF Bulls football team takes on the ranked Louisville Cardinals at high noon; but we will be kicking off the festivities at 9:00 AM in the “Mall” Parking Lot at Raymond James (it’s the lot with an entrance on MLK Boulevard just east of Himes). We will have various breakfast items to eat and welcome you to join and bring food, libations and your family.

Sunday will mark our first ever USF Chi Phi Scholarship Scramble golf outing to be held at The Claw at USF. Sign-in starts at 7:15 AM with a shotgun start at 8:30 AM. We will close out the weekend with a reception and lunch at the Claw around 1:00 PM, where we will announce the tournament winners. Registration is now closed for the event, but we expect up to 50 golfers to play! All proceeds from the event will be donated in the Delta Zeta Chapter’s Scholarship Fund.

179873_10150396428095512_658850511_17507976_4478246_nThe undertaking in the planning of these events was nothing short of a miracle in action. Brothers Kyllan Purdon, Todd Latoski, Ryan Suarez and Clinton Millsap spent hundreds of hours of their free time to make the event a success. We all owe them a debt of gratitude.  Thank you all for your help and wisdom over the past 6 months. I look forward to serving you for the next 6 months and beyond!

Fraternally,

David Ebner
DZAA President
