Chapter News – Keeping Up with the Actives

The Delta Zeta Chapter at USF has been very busy since the beginning of the school year.   Not only did they induct 8 new members into the Chapter during Rush Week, but they have since added a 9th new inductee into the Fraternity!

On September 23rd, Jose Suarez (the current Alpha) and seven others went out of their way to support the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by going to Chili’s Donate Profits Day.  This was the 10th year that Chili’s has sponsored this event, donating 100% of their net profits on this one day to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  St. Jude leads the way the world understands, treats, and defeats childhood cancer and other deadly diseases.  It’s great to see the Active Brothers participate in such a worthwhile cause, just another way that Delta Zeta gives back to the community!

The Brothers are also working diligently to prepare for their 3rd Annual Spelling Bee philanthropy, set to take place on the USF campus on October 29th.  With two successful years under their belt, the Chapter is sure to raise even more funds this year for the Boys and Girls Club of America!

Finally, this past Saturday, each of the new members received their Big Brothers.  After an activity-filled evening of string theory and yogurt eating contest, each new member was given a candle and walked around a circle of Brothers.  The Brother who extinguished the candle was their Big, and it was an amazing evening!  The new members were ecstatic, to say the least, that they now had their Big Brothers to guide them on their way!

Fellow alumnus, Brother David Ebner, went to the Chapter’s meeting recently, where he spoke about the upcoming Golf outing.  He reported that things seem to be going very well with the Chapter, and the current Alpha and Beta are keeping the Chapter focused, holding the Brothers accountable and reminding everyone what it is to be a Chi Phi!

The active chapter is hosting their Third Annual Spelling Bee to raise funds for the Boys and Girls Club of America.  Seeing the amount of success they have had in the past two years with this competition, the Chapter felt that it was right to do it again!  The event date is listed on the Facebook event page:

https://www.facebook.com/events/681312978565440/

Tuesday, October 29th
6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
MSC Oval Theater
*The event will start promptly at 6:00pm. Please have participants arrive no less than 30 minutes early.

The competition is simply a spelling bee. There is a 5 participant limit per organization. Each participant must be an active member of their respective organization. Entrance fee for each spelling participant will be $15. General admission at the door will be $2 (excluding participants). Competition works as follows:

There are 2 ways in which one can advance to the next round –

1) The participant correctly spells the given word.
2) Someone uninvolved in the competition can pay to keep the participant in should they fail to spell the word correctly.

There is no limit to the number of times one can be bought back into the competition; however, the amount needed to remain in the competition goes up in intervals of $5 each time.

1st buy back = $5
2nd buy back = $10
3rd buy back = $15
And so on.

Organizational tabs will be offered. If an organization is paying for a participant or multiple participants using chapter funds, we will keep track of the total amount that organization has used for buy backs so that they can make one simple payment at the end of the event. The pattern can continue this way indefinitely until the final half hour, in which the participant must correctly spell the word to advance in the competition.

The winners in the spelling bee will simply be the top 3 spellers. Trophies will be awarded to those placing in the top 3. There will also be an overall winner of the philanthropy. There are three categories that determine the winning organization:

1. Placement in top 3 spellers.
2. Attendance percentage for the organization
3. Best costume  (The costume will be judged by design and creativity [the funnier the better].)

A trophy will be awarded to the overall winning organization of the philanthropy.  All proceeds will be donated to the Boys and Girls Club of America.  The Chapter is encouraging any and all Alumni to come out, show support to the Active Chapter, and enjoy an evening of members of the Greek community showcasing their ability to spell!

Welcome the Newly-Elected Chapter Alpha – Jose Suarez

With the new school year and the new semester comes Delta Zeta’s newest Alpha – congratulations to Jose Suarez on his election to this prestigious position.  Brother Suarez, who is currently a senior at USF, joined Chi Phi in the Spring of 2010 with the Alpha Upsilon pledge class.  His first role in the fraternity was to serve as Social Chair, followed promptly by Beta.

And now, a few words from the Alpha himself:

First and foremost, I want to thank the active chapter for electing me to the position of Alpha. I know it’s a very challenging and rewarding position, so I am excited to take it on. With my time serving as Beta, I learned the internal and external mechanics to the Fraternity in how to make it flow efficiently. When I was elected to Alpha, I knew it was because each of the Brothers saw me as a true leader that wanted nothing but the best from our Brothers. Some of the goals that we have this semester is to have full accreditation with not only USF, but with nationals as well. I am pushing for chapter excellence and initiative from Brothers to want to do more within the community. I also am wanting to be able to effectively recruit and retain individuals who want to be a part of our Brotherhood. I feel that I have the motivation and the skill set to get us to where we need to be, and that we would be able to even go as far as to exceed those expectations.

Fraternally,
Jose Suarez

Take a moment and give Brother Suarez a word of encouragement in his new role within the Fraternity, and let’s watch him take the Delta Zeta Chapter at USF to even greater heights and success!
