Up for Election – Vice-President!

Kyllan PurdonNext up for election this April is the position of Vice-President, currently held by Brother Kyllan Purdon. When asked about his position, he provided the following:

The Vice-President is responsible for setting up and hosting the Alumni events – this would include the DZAA Third Thursdays, which is a monthly happy hour that provides an opportunity for the Alumni to get together and give us a break from the normal. There is also the Annual Golf Tournament, each Fall, that raises money for our Chapter of Excellence Fund and homecoming. In the Spring, we have Founders’ Weekend and a banquet to help raise money for the Housing Fund.

The position of the Vice-President runs successfully when he has a group of chairs/people or helpers to whom he can delegate tasks, as the planning, organizing, and running these events can become a bit overwhelming without the help.

Up for Election – President!

1796583_10153886833655245_981596163_nFirst up for election this April is the position of President, currently held by Brother David Ebner. When asked about his position, he provided the following:

There is no checklist of responsibilities for the President of the DZAA. The position is really what you make if it, and in turn, the association is what you make of the position. The DZAA operates like a machine that includes a few gears that constantly roll over one another. The President is maintenance, the resident applies the grease.

Directly, the President oversees all officers and chairman, which in its current rendition, includes the Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Technology Chairman and Archivist. He works closely with these officers on their individual roles and on special assignments. I would estimate that each officer and chairman operates about 90 percent of their time in the realm of special assignments. There should always be a lead on an event, like the Founders Weekend and the Scholarship Scramble, sometimes that will be the President, sometimes it won’t. It is, however, the President’s job to work with the event leader to plan out the stages of the event along with the assignments leading up to the event. Planning is the President’s chief responsibility. Luckily for the DZAA, we have top notch officers and chairman that charge head on into their duties and are reliable and diligent. This will make the job of the President ever so much easier.

In addition to the officers and chairman, you will need to work hand-in-hand with the Chapter Advisor, the University Administrators, the Chapter President and the National Office when situation permits.

As noted above, as long as there is a goal and the calendar is planned out in advance, the President is primarily a paper pusher and motivator. As far as a time commitment goes, you can expect to expire 5 hours a week to the positon. This number increases when events are approaching and decreases when proper planning is executed.

The President of the DZAA is a fun and very rewarding position. I cannot recall all of the compliments I have gotten from our membership and returned to the other board members. It takes us all to carry the DZAA up the hill, but many hands make little work. It’s the President’s job to find the right hands and fill them with tools.

DZAA Board Elections are Coming!

Attention Alumni!

Elections for all the positions on the Executive Board for the Delta Zeta Alumni Association are coming up at the 2015 Spring Meeting of the DZAA. As you may recall, the current Board was elected at the 2013 Spring Meeting, and Brothers David Ebner, Kyllan Purdon, ???????????????????????????????Todd Latoski, and Ryan Suarez were duly elected by the General Membership to assume the roles of President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer, respectively. Each of these Brothers took their new roles seriously and have endeavored to serve the Association with dedication and commitment.

Pursuant to Article VII of the current By-Laws, officers of the DZAA shall serve a term of two (2) years. The two-year term for the current Board comes to a close this April, and at the Spring Meeting to be held on Saturday, April 18th at the USF Marshall Center, an election will take place to install new officers to fill the Board.

vote12Article VII of the current By-Laws provides that nominations for the offices of President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer may be taken from the floor at the bi-annual meeting just prior to elections, or nominations may also be submitted prior to the meeting either by post-mail or by e-mail to the Secretary by any member of the DZAA who is in good standing and eligible to vote. A voting member is defined by the By-Laws as any initiated Alumnus of the Chi Phi Fraternity who does not hold voting rights in any other Chapter-specific Alumni Association or Housing Corporation and who is current on their financial obligation (dues) to the DZAA.

Elections will take place at the Spring Meeting, immediately following the close of nominations from the floor. Voting shall be by hand ballot, unless a secret ballot is approved by a majority vote. Majority vote is required to elect any position.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting, and for those who are unable to personally attend the April 18th meeting, information will be forthcoming as to proxy voting. So start thinking about what position you would like to run for (or an Alumnus you would like to nominate for a position) and mark your calendar for April 18th! It’s going to be the start of an exciting new two-year term of the DZAA, as we move upward and onward!
