National News – Congress is Coming!

CongressThe 149th Chi Phi Congress is coming!  Set for June 26 – 29, 2014 in Austin, Texas, Congress will see Chi Phi Brothers from all over the country converge to conduct the affairs of the Fraternity during the day and enjoy the sites of Austin during the evening.  This year, the Congress will meet to evaluate new and existing Fraternity policies, to adopt a 2015 budget for Chi Phi, to select a Grand Alpha-elect, and to consider any of its own legislation.  Also, all 2013 award winners will be recognized at the event.

Every registered Alumni Association is entitled to one voting delegate.  Last year, Brother David Ebner attended Congress, and this year, Brother Kyllan Purdon will be attending as the DZAA delegate.  There are plenty of events lined up for this year’s Congress, including a free day to explore Austin on Thursday, June 26th; an authentic Texas BBQ dinner on the evening of Friday, June 27th; a hands-on experience in the Whole Foods Market kitchens guided by one of Whole Foods expert chefs on the morning of Saturday, June 28th; and a Cocktail Reception and Congressional Banquet on the evening of Saturday, June 28th.  And for those of you who are golf fanatics, there will also be the 2014 Watts Gunn Memorial Golf Tournament on Thursday, June 26th (which honors Watts Gunn, Omega 1928, who made golfing history in 1925 by winning 15 straight holes in the first round of the U.S. Amateur, and went on to win many other games).  Proceeds from the tournament support the College of Excellence and Chi Phi’s other leadership development programs.

Welcome the Newly-Elected Chapter Alpha – Jose Suarez

With the new school year and the new semester comes Delta Zeta’s newest Alpha – congratulations to Jose Suarez on his election to this prestigious position.  Brother Suarez, who is currently a senior at USF, joined Chi Phi in the Spring of 2010 with the Alpha Upsilon pledge class.  His first role in the fraternity was to serve as Social Chair, followed promptly by Beta.

Jose Suarez

And now, a few words from the Alpha himself:

First and foremost, I want to thank the active chapter for electing me to the position of Alpha. I know it’s a very challenging and rewarding position, so I am excited to take it on. With my time serving as Beta, I learned the internal and external mechanics to the Fraternity in how to make it flow efficiently. When I was elected to Alpha, I knew it was because each of the Brothers saw me as a true leader that wanted nothing but the best from our Brothers. Some of the goals that we have this semester is to have full accreditation with not only USF, but with nationals as well. I am pushing for chapter excellence and initiative from Brothers to want to do more within the community. I also am wanting to be able to effectively recruit and retain individuals who want to be a part of our Brotherhood. I feel that I have the motivation and the skill set to get us to where we need to be, and that we would be able to even go as far as to exceed those expectations.

Fraternally,
Jose Suarez

Take a moment and give Brother Suarez a word of encouragement in his new role within the Fraternity, and let’s watch him take the Delta Zeta Chapter at USF to even greater heights and success!
