President’s Message – Looking Ahead

Brothers,

As 2013 closes and a new year begins, I think it is just to reflect on the past. In 2013, the DZAA participated in its first ever philanthropy event, we held a staggering number of social events–Third Thursdays, Football Tailgates, Happy hours, a Christmas Party– we presented the first inaugural USF Chi Phi Scholarship Scramble, created a long term home for the DZAA online through www.usfchiphialumni.com, and enlisted a handful of men to help lead our organization to new heights.

Although, as the saying goes, the past is the past, it’s great to have a storied history to recollect; but those days have come and gone. If there is a single greatest weakness of Fraternities, it’s their past. Not that we had done anything particularly wrong in the past, but we spend more time remembering than we do planning. PASTWe like to recall how things were and contrast the differences between then and now. It’s a default mechanism we all have.  It hides in our Fraternity mind, this idea that we must daunt on the past, and somehow, through Fraternity wizardry, it will codify our experience as justified. The problem with this scenario is, that if we spend our todays reflecting on the past, then how will our tomorrows look? What has more of an influence on tomorrow? Yesterday or Today? How do we achieve greatness and creative ingenuity, if we simply seek to copy and paste, to forgerize our younger selves?

As an organization, we could simply fall into a complacent bubble, and rest on the achievements of 2013. We could say “hey, we have already done more than ever, and potentially more than anyone else, so we should feel good and be content.” NOWFor some of us, the notion that we made an oath at initiation to always be a Chi Phi–to stay involved and to be the best man we can be–is enough to hold our attention. Others feel a nagging responsibility to the Brothers that are carrying the flag, to those phone calls, e-mails and not so subtle asks for money or help.  Thank you, to those of you who answered those calls; but I’m interested in a different path. I’m interested in being creative, in looking at our problems in a new light. I want to think as though money did not exist, that we had unlimited manpower and an overwhelming creative attitude.

I, by pure chance, ran into Brother Milo Cambridge the other day, and we reminisced over cigars.  Our conversation started with niceties, moved onto entrepreneurship, and eventually became a philosophical discussion about life (cigars always lead to philosophy). Near the end of our conversation, Brother Cambridge informed me about the meaning of life. He said that life was about creation, that what a person creates is the only true immortalization that they can achieve. I instantly thought of the DZAA and came to this paradoxical question: What could an organization that is seemingly immortal (we have lasted 30 years and could theoretically last for hundreds more) create? The answer is only limited by our imaginations.

In conclusion, 2014 will be just that, limited by our imagination.  Sure, we need money and support from all of you; but more than that, we will be creative.  We won’t say “that failed in the past”—we will say “tell me more about that.”  So, tell us more about what you want the DZAA to be.  Don’t limit yourself, because we’re immortal, and we are able to create anything you can imagine.

I look forward to a prosperous year filled with frivolity and creation and sharing it with all of you.

Fraternally,

David Ebner

In the News – Recognizing the DZAA

Every year, Chi Phi’s National Office recognizes Chapters and Alumni Associations across the country in many different areas.  Each spring, applications for the awards are posted to the Chi Phi website, and the applications are reviewed and awards are presented each year at Congress.  Below are some of the awards for which an Alumni Association can be recognized:

OUTSTANDING ALUMNI NEWSLETTER AWARD:  outstanding2This award is given annually to no more than three Chapters based upon the following criteria – (1) at least two newsletters published annually; (2) content timely and appropriate; (3) positive alumni response to the newsletter; and (4) quality organization, accuracy, and arrangement.

OUTSTANDING WEBSITE AWARD:  This award is given annually to the Chapter with the best website.

THE WILLIAM M. BYRD ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR AWARD:  This award, named for Brother William M. Byrd, Nu 1953, a former Grand Zeta and Trustee, is presented each year to the Chi Phi Alumnus who has best distinguished himself in activities and service on behalf of the Fraternity.

CHAPTER ADVISOR OF THE YEAR AWARD:  Awarded annually, this award recognizes the top Chapter Advisors of all Chapters within the Fraternity.  Nominations come from the Chapters themselves.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OF THE YEAR AWARD:  This award recognizes the Chapter Alumni Association that has done an outstanding job in supporting an undergraduate Chapter, providing benefits of membership to that Chapter’s Alumni, and promoting the mission of the Chi Phi Fraternity.

ServiceCHI PHI FRATERNITY – DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD:  This annual award recognizes Chi Phi Brothers who have demonstrated an extraordinary level of service to the Fraternity in terms of numbers of years and throughout the previous year.

CHI PHI FRATERNITY – CRONKITE CONGRESSIONAL AWARD:  The Walter Leland Cronkite Jr. Chi Phi Congressional Award is the most prestigious individual honor the Chi Phi Fraternity can bestow on an Alumnus.  It is given for humanitarian, social, or political achievement which benefits our country, educational system, or society.  The Cronkite Award is reserved for Alumni who have made a profound impact on humanity while exemplifying the highest ideals of the Fraternity.

There are a number of opportunities for our Alumni Association to be recognized, and while spring is still several months away, it’s never too early to begin thinking about what awards the DZAA may be eligible to receive.

As we near the end of 2013 and look back over the year, 1659563let’s consider the ways that the Alumni Association has grown…the ways that the Alumni have given back to the community…the ways that the DZAA has reached out to its members and kept them updated and informed…the ways that the Association has supported and encouraged the Active Chapter – then, let’s look forward to all the opportunities we will have in 2014 to do all of that and more!

Around the Peninsula with Chi Phi – Xi Delta Wins Best Chapter

Xi Delta has Xi Delta Winsbeen moving and shaking this year!  The Chi Phi Chapter at the Florida Institute of Technology made their mark at the 148th Congress this year, when they received the Thomas A. Gehring Award for Best Chapter!  On top of that, Xi Delta was awarded Accreditation with Distinction for Two Consecutive Semesters and the Outstanding Alumni Newsletter Award!  Way to go, Brothers!

On a more serious note, last month, the Brothers of Xi Delta gathered to pay their respects and pay tribute to the memory of past Grand Alpha Brother Richard Lane, who, sadly, was taken from us all too soon this past summer in an automobile accident.   The Chapter and their local Alumni, along with National Director Brother Michael Azarian, came out to show their support.  A memorial plaque for Brother Lane was given to the National Office, and an orange tree was planted on the side of the Xi Delta house in honor of Brother Lane.
