Around the Peninsula – Xi Delta Raises $1,200 for Boys & Girls Club

The First Annual “Kicking for Kids,” hosted by the Xi Delta Chapter of the Chi Phi Fraternity, was held recently at the Xi Delta KidsFlorida Avenue Soccer Fields. The Fraternity focused on raising funds for the Boys and Girls Club of America, whose mission is to facilitate after-school programs for young people while instilling a sense of belonging and worth for the individuals.  For Chi Phi, Kicking for Kids was the first large event that the chapter had done at Florida Tech. After deciding to host their first big event, Chi Phi pitched the idea of a soccer tournament.

Overall, fifteen teams participated in the competition on Sunday. The sudden death 8v8 soccer tournament required a $90 sign-up fee with all proceeds going to the national non-profit association. The winning team was rewarded with a trophy and $200. The games themselves began at 10 am and teams played throughout the day on two separate pitches, with a final match ending the event.  The event functioned as a ‘pilot tournament’ that would help the fraternity test out the idea for future years.

“This is our first time hosting the event so it will help us have a better idea for what we need to do for upcoming and future years,” explained Aral Taser, the Chapter’s Xi Delta Playsphilanthropy chair. “Hopefully we can make it an annual event that will grow and become more impressive each and every year.”  Whether it was to participate in the games or just to watch the tournament, FIT students came out to the event. With live music and food, spectators watched the thirty minute matches comfortably with friends and classmates. Many students were very pleased when they first heard about the event. “I heard about it first from Greek Life and I said to myself, I have to go to this. I really hope they keep this going. It will be great to know that we’ve raised a lot of money for the Boys and Girls Club,” said junior Shelby Zielinski. “I’m having an amazing time, both watching and playing. It will be interesting to see who wins.”

And at the end of the tournament it was International Football Club (ICF) that took home the trophy and cash. “We played hard!” the players stated as they paraded through the field with their trophy.

Around the Peninsula – Gettin’ Down ‘N Dirty with Theta Delta

This past weekend, our Brothers at the University of Florida got down and dirty Down n Dirty 2when they participated in Pi Beta Phi Sorority’s annual philanthropy, Down ‘N Dirty.  This philanthropy consists of a BBQ and a flag football tournament, and the gentlemen of University of Florida’s various Fraternities compete in the tournament to be named the overall winner of Down ‘N Dirty!  Exciting and fun, the event has some of the highest participation out of every Sorority philanthropy on the University of Florida campus.  In 2013, the sisters of Pi Beta Phi raised over $22,000!

The Brothers of the Down n Dirty 1Theta Delta Chapter of Chi Phi, who never back down from a challenge, got out there and got dirty as they played hard.  While they didn’t make first place (that honor went to Delta Chi), the men of Chi Phi did manage to come in a very respectable third place out of all the Fraternities who participated!

Let’s give the men of Theta Delta props for not only getting out there and Down n Dirty 3staying involved in their Greek community, but for not being afraid of getting dirty to help their sisters I Pi Beta Phi promote and support literacy through their donations to First Book, an international nonprofit organization founded in 1992 with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books.

Chi Phi 3rd Annual Spelling Bee Philanthropy

SpellingBee_Page_1

The active chapter is hosting their Third Annual Spelling Bee to raise funds for the Boys and Girls Club of America.  Seeing the amount of success they have had in the past two years with this competition, the Chapter felt that it was right to do it again!  The event date is listed on the Facebook event page:

https://www.facebook.com/events/681312978565440/

Tuesday, October 29th
6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
MSC Oval Theater
*The event will start promptly at 6:00pm. Please have participants arrive no less than 30 minutes early.

The competition is simply a spelling bee. There is a 5 participant limit per organization. Each participant must be an active member of their respective organization. Entrance fee for each spelling participant will be $15. General admission at the door will be $2 (excluding participants). Competition works as follows:

There are 2 ways in which one can advance to the next round –

1) The participant correctly spells the given word.
2) Someone uninvolved in the competition can pay to keep the participant in should they fail to spell the word correctly.

There is no limit to the number of times one can be bought back into the competition; however, the amount needed to remain in the competition goes up in intervals of $5 each time.

1st buy back = $5
2nd buy back = $10
3rd buy back = $15
And so on.

Organizational tabs will be offered. If an organization is paying for a participant or multiple participants using chapter funds, we will keep track of the total amount that organization has used for buy backs so that they can make one simple payment at the end of the event. The pattern can continue this way indefinitely until the final half hour, in which the participant must correctly spell the word to advance in the competition.

The winners in the spelling bee will simply be the top 3 spellers. Trophies will be awarded to those placing in the top 3. There will also be an overall winner of the philanthropy. There are three categories that determine the winning organization:

1. Placement in top 3 spellers.
2. Attendance percentage for the organization
3. Best costume  (The costume will be judged by design and creativity [the funnier the better].)

A trophy will be awarded to the overall winning organization of the philanthropy.  All proceeds will be donated to the Boys and Girls Club of America.  The Chapter is encouraging any and all Alumni to come out, show support to the Active Chapter, and enjoy an evening of members of the Greek community showcasing their ability to spell!
