Scholarship Scramble: A Fun Way to Give Back

By: David Ebner

We’ve all received the emails and and postcards asking us to contribute to this cause or that, one charity or another. Many of us have even received such solicitations from Chi Phi. Sometimes, I feel like I’m on their speed-dial.  But when I open that letter or read that e-mail I am usually moved to some degree. I scoff at first, but eventually, after some level of financial assessment, I come to the conclusion that I could in fact give something, albeit small, to further the cause. In return, we get hand-written thank yous and every Januar a nice letter to hand to our accountings that says, “Yeah, I give back, no biggie.”

Few times in my life can I say I’ve given back to a cause and had fun doing it. When I heard Kyllan Purdon’s idea of holding a golf scramble to benefit the Delta Zeta Scholarship Fund I was ecstatic.  I signed-up for a Gold Sponsorship for my company Lectores Coffee. I plan on winning the first place trophy (incase you thought you didn’t have any competition). So this year, when I hand my accountant a deduction form from the Chi Phi Educational Trust, I will do so knowing that I did make a difference, that I had fun doing it and my Chapter is better for it. The trophy in my office will serve as a constant reminder of this as well.

If you’re interested in playing in the first inaugural USF Chi Phi Scholarship Scramble, check out the registration page and take the plunge. Get your employer to be a Gold or Platinum Sponsor and talk them into allowing you to play on one of their complementary foursomes. For information about a tax-deductible sponsorship contact Kyllan Purdon.
